This year has been extremely busy and our foster carers are an invaluable part of the work we do to help whippets across the UK.
We have a fantastic team of experienced foster carers at the moment, but we are looking for some more foster homes to join our team in 2025 as the amount of whippets needing our help is sadly rising each year. You can find more details here on our Fostering page. Please read the criteria in full before applying.
I’m sure you know that most whippets don’t do well in kennels, and with so many whippets needing our help it’s important that we have experienced and safe foster carers/homes to help us while we find them their perfect forever families.
Many of the whippets coming into our care need extra support with behaviourial issuses such as – lead reactivity, separation anxiety, fear aggression, resource guarding and nervousness. We also have whippets that need pet free homes and/or child free homes.
We need our foster carers to be able to assess each dog accordingly and report back to us so we can be sure that we match them to the most suitable new home.
Foster carers must meet the below requirements,
- Have experience looking after whippets / sighthounds.
- Have a fully secure garden (ideally with minimum 6ft fence but we will assess each application individually).
- Be able to transport the whippets safely, securely and legally in their own vehicle to vet checks etc if required.
- Be able to assess the whippets and report back to us their requirements/needs so that we can find them the best possible forever home.
- Please note that we rarely have cat friendly whippets available for fostering.
Foster placements generally last between 2 and 12 weeks depending on each individual case and we do sometimes require ‘lifetime’ fosters for whippets with more complex needs or whippets needing end of life care. We fund all costs for the Whippet while they are in foster care, and this will be discussed in full with successful applicants. We will carry out a homevisit and you will also need to read through and agree to our fostering contract before fostering takes place.
If you think you can help us by offering an EXPERIENCED and UNDERSTANDING foster home please fill in an application form here.
Please bear with us for a response as we are extremely busy.
Thank you
Hi, I don’t have any experience with whippets specifically but have dog ownership experience over 31 years first of a West Highland Terrier 1990 – 2007 and a beagle from 2007 – 2022. I am rather senior in years but with no mobility problems in fact entirely capable of walking distances appropriate to a dog’s needs. Could you respond with your thoughts on my intentions,
Thank you
Hi Madeleine, the best contact for you would be to fill in the Fostering form here: https://whippetrescue.org.uk/get-involved/fostering-a-whippet/ . I’m just the website admin, but both Lisa and Katie would see your request that way.
