Even when we appear to be quiet, we can assure you that we aren’t! Unfortunately, the world of rescue never stops.
Whether it’s emergency rescues, people needing to surrender their dogs, adoption applications, people asking for advice, transport, phone calls, emails or messages, we are always busy behind the scenes.
Today, we wanted to take you back to a year ago, when one of our most urgent emergencies required everyone to jump into action.
On 12th August 2025, we received a call asking us to help three Whippets after their owner had sadly fallen on hard times and was no longer able to give them the care they needed.
We immediately began making arrangements to collect them as soon as possible, but nothing could have prepared us for the events that followed.
Later that afternoon, we received a very panicked phone call from their owner, which began:
“Please help, one of them has just had a baby!”
It took us a few moments to process what we had heard, but we suddenly found ourselves acting as midwives over the phone, trying to calm the situation and explain what to do. They were more than two hours away from our nearest team member, so we had to think of something fast.
We contacted a lovely lady we knew of who lived nearby, explained the situation and, without hesitation (even though her air fryer had just pinged with her dinner in!), she jumped into her car to help deliver the puppies and make sure everyone was safe for the night. We will be forever grateful to her.
Very early the following morning, Lisa hopped into her van to collect them all. Their living situation really wasn’t suitable, so their owner was absolutely doing the right thing for them, but that obviously didn’t make saying goodbye any easier.
Unfortunately, the male, who was the father of the puppies, had already been rehomed privately, so we weren’t able to take him at the time. However, mum, her three puppies and “Auntie Havana” were all safely brought into our care.
Our lovely foster carer Kim kindly agreed to care for mum and her puppies until they were ready to find their forever homes, while Auntie Havana went home on foster with Lisa.
Havana was able to be spayed and move to her forever home quite quickly, but mum and the puppies obviously needed to remain in foster until the puppies were at least eight weeks old.
During that time, we looked through our list of homechecked potential adopters and carefully matched each of them with the home most suited to their individual needs. Needless to say, their adopters were all very excited!
Over the following weeks, they blossomed. The puppies grew strong and healthy, and all of them developed the most wonderful personalities and temperaments.
Eight weeks flew by, and it was soon time for them to fly the nest and begin their new lives in their forever homes.
A couple of months later, we were contacted again about their dad and, thankfully, we were able to bring him safely into our care too. We were also very relieved to learn that he wasn’t related to the pups’ mum!
Today, mum Poppy, dad Bruce, auntie Havana and all three puppies are living their very best lives in their forever homes.
So, a very HAPPY 1ST BIRTHDAY to WILFRED, BERTIE AND FIGGY!
What an unforgettable start you had, but what wonderful lives you all have now.
You will forever hold a huge piece of our hearts.
