Due to the number of Whippets we currently have in our care, we are unable to accept rehoming applications for Lurchers.
Rehoming My Whippet Through JR Whippet Rescue CIO – FAQs
We understand that if you are reading this, you may be facing one of the most difficult decisions a dog owner can make. Rehoming a Whippet is never something taken lightly, and it often comes with sadness, worry and a great deal of emotion.
At JR Whippet Rescue, our priority is always the welfare of the Whippet, but we also recognise the emotional weight this decision can carry for you. Our role is not to judge, but to support, guide and ensure that your Whippet’s future is safe, secure and carefully considered.
Every Whippet we help is treated as an individual, and every rehoming decision is made with compassion, responsibility and lifelong commitment.
Below you will find answers to the most common questions about the rehoming process.
I need to find a new home for my Whippet. Why should I use a rescue?
Making the decision to rehome a much loved Whippet is never easy. It can feel overwhelming, emotional and worrying. Our priority is to support both you and your Whippet through this process with care and understanding.
Using a reputable rescue ensures your Whippet’s welfare is fully protected. Every potential adopter goes through a thorough application process and home check, and each match is carefully considered based on the Whippet’s individual temperament, needs and circumstances.
At JR Whippet Rescue, we are committed to responsible rehoming and lifetime backup. Our support does not end on adoption day; we remain here for every Whippet we rehome.
For your Whippet’s safety, we strongly advise against advertising on social media or classified websites such as Facebook, Gumtree or Preloved, as this can place them at significant risk.
I would like JR Whippet Rescue CIO to rehome my Whippet. How do I get in touch?
If you would like our help, please complete the rehoming form as honestly and thoroughly as possible. The more we understand about your Whippet’s personality, behaviour, routine and medical history, the better we can find the right match.
Before submitting the form, please ensure you are fully certain in your decision. Beginning the process and then withdrawing can be upsetting for potential adopters who may already be preparing to welcome your Whippet into their home, and it can also be very time consuming for us.

What happens once the form is submitted?
Once received, we carefully assess the information provided and determine the most appropriate next steps. This may involve arranging a foster placement or, in some circumstances, identifying a suitable direct adoption. This is why it is important to be sure of your decision before submitting the form.
We will always keep your Whippet’s welfare and individual needs at the centre of every decision.
Lisa will make contact within 72 hours of receiving your completed form to discuss everything in more detail.
When we arrange for the Whippet to come into our care, you will be asked to sign a form to transfer ownership to JR Whippet Rescue CIO.
Where will my Whippet go whilst looking for a new home?
We work across the UK and have experienced, approved foster carers with secure homes and gardens.
Each Whippet is thoughtfully matched with the most suitable foster carer based on temperament and needs. Foster homes allow us to properly assess behaviour, understand personality and ensure the best possible permanent match.
Where behavioural challenges are present, such as reactivity, separation anxiety or nervousness, foster carers may begin gentle training and confidencebuilding work. This helps us provide clear guidance to future adopters.
In some suitable cases, a Whippet may move directly to a carefully matched forever home without a foster period.
Can I send my Whippet’s belongings?
Yes. You are very welcome to send belongings you would like them to keep. We especially recommend including a blanket or bed that smells like home, as this can help them feel more settled and secure.
We will also ask you to provide written details about feeding, exercise, medical history, routine and any behavioural traits. This ensures continuity of care and supports a smooth transition.
Can I keep in touch with my Whippet’s new owners?
Due to GDPR regulations, direct contact between previous and new owners is rarely possible.
However, we understand this will be a difficult time for you, so we are happy to provide a couple of updates and photographs where possible, so you know your Whippet is safe and settling well.
How will my Whippet be transported?
We have a trusted team of approved volunteers and transporters. In most cases, we will arrange collection from your home and ensure your Whippet is transported safely and legally to their foster or new home.
What happens if it doesn’t work out?
We pride ourselves on responsible matching, and it is rare for placements not to work out.
However, if for any reason things do not go as planned, or if an adopter’s circumstances change in the future, we offer lifetime rescue backup. Your Whippet’s welfare and wellbeing will always remain our top priority.
