With the recent news that Kennel Club registrations for whippet puppies have seen an 18% rise in the first quarter of 2026, we are sadly preparing for an even busier future for our rescue, as this is undoubtedly going to have a knock-on effect in the years ahead.
We absolutely appreciate that our breed needs responsible breeders. By this, we mean breeders who are focused on the health, temperament and longevity of this wonderful breed, who carry out thorough checks on prospective puppy buyers, and who provide lifetime support and backup for the dogs they bring into the world.
Sadly, this is not always the case. Many dogs are still being bred without the care, responsibility and long-term support they deserve, and this is one of the reasons rescues like ours are needed more and more each year.
Our own figures are increasing year on year, with many whippets arriving in our care with temperament challenges, medical conditions, or complex needs that require understanding adopters and ongoing support. With that in mind, news of an increase in registrations is very concerning for us.
Even more worrying is that we are also seeing an increase in breeders contacting us directly because they are struggling to sell or find suitable homes for their puppies and are turning to rescue organisations like ours for help.
Our dedicated team of staff, volunteers and foster carers will always be here to help whippets in need, and our commitment to their welfare and future happiness will never change.
But please, if you are considering buying a whippet puppy, or any breed for that matter, do plenty of research. Make sure the breed is right for your lifestyle and that you have the time, patience, understanding and long-term commitment needed for taking on a dog. It is also incredibly important to only buy from responsible, reputable breeders who carry out all relevant checks and offer the support and backup you may one day need.
Our rehoming co-ordinator, Katie Manners, wrote the piece below for our most recent newsletter, and we wanted to share it here with you all too.
We’d like to thank you all for your continued support.

Re: Rise in Whippet Popularity Concerns that You mention.
I was annoyed and deeply concerned after reading the Daily Mail article, 28 May 26, by Shivall Best about the Whippet’s strengths and rise in popularity.
This advertising in a popular tabloid is no help to your wonderful rescue and the press should not encourage or allow this. It will worsen an already sad and difficult situation of abandonment. It is irresponsible of reporters and also I find it hard to believe that breeders are now asking for your help! Just via Champdogs alone over the last few months, I see there are increasing numbers of new litters. Articles on the Internet stating that Whippets are such an easy breed to leave alone while owners are out at work all day due to their lengthy sleeping habits, is also infuriating to me.
Sorry to moan but had to get this off my chest and I fully understand your concerns. You do such a wonderful job – I just wish I was in a position to help.
