We are desperately looking for sighthound experienced, pet and child free foster homes to help us with the whippets coming into our care.
Foster carers are an invaluable support to the work we do here at JR, and we currently have an amazing team of foster carers all over the UK who help us, but we need experienced whippet owners who can offer pet and child free homes to help us assess and offer initial training to whippets with more challenging needs.
Please note that we can currently only consider foster homes that meet the criteria below.
What we need –
Foster carers experienced with whippets/sighthounds who understand their natural traits.
Homes with fully secure gardens, ideally with minimum 6ft fencing as the dogs coming into our care can be flight risks initially. (Please note we can only except foster homes with private secure gardens. No communal gardens or flats).
Someone who is able to be at home most of the time. Lots of the whippets coming into our care suffer from separation anxiety and this is something that they often need help to overcome, so we can’t accept foster carers who work full time away from home or need to be out the house for prolonged periods.
Homes with NO other pets. This is probably the biggest ask as we know whippet lovers will often have multiple! But we really need foster homes for whippets that need to be only pets, where they can be properly assessed and any training given.
Homes with NO cats or small furries.
Homes with NO young children or visiting children. For some whippets, foster homes with older sensible children can be considered, but we do also need child free fosters for the whippets with more complex behaviourial needs.
Foster carers who can drive, or have access to a reliable driver so the whippets can be taken for vet checks and to socialise / be assessed in different environments. The whippets also need to be transported safely and legally.
Foster carers who can be committed to helping the whippet overcome any challenges they may have, with our full support and guidance.
Foster carers who are good at communicating and keeping in touch as Lisa and Katie like to be kept up to date with the Whippets progress. Foster carers may also be required to carry out meet and greets with potential new owners.
Foster placements can last from between 2 weeks and 6 months depending on each individual case.
Being a foster carer can be a huge commitment, but it’s so rewarding to know you’ve played a huge part in rehabilitating a whippet to help them live a long and happy life in a forever home.
We cover all costs while the whippet is in foster care and this is something we will discuss in full detail with potential foster carers.
All foster homes are subject to thorough homecheck.
We are extremely grateful to all our foster carers ![]()
