Whippets in need of homes that cannot be walked.

This may seem like a strange appeal to some, but we really need good homes that do NOT want, or need, to walk their dogs in public.

We know that most people will believe that being a responsible dog owner means being able to take them on daily walks, but for some dogs, walking is a very stressful experience that needs to be avoided.

We have seen a huge increase in the amount of whippets being surrendered to our care due to reactivity issues towards other dogs. In some cases it’s due to the fact that they’ve been attacked by another dog when out walking previously and this has made them fear reactive. In other cases it’s due to a severe lack of socialisation at a crucial time during their upbringing, these are often ‘lockdown puppies’, and in some cases it’s due to poor breeding causing bad temperaments.

Jinx the whippet

Whatever the cause, we have, and will continue to have, whippets in need of homes that will NOT walk them or want to take them out in public / on holiday etc as they find it far to stressful, and it also puts them and other dogs at risk.

All the dogs in need of these types of homes are excellent with people and are amazing pets inside of the home/garden.

What we are looking for is

  • Sensible adopters who understand whippets, will listen to us and not take unnecessary risks with the dogs. Understanding that using a muzzle during vet visits etc may be needed.
  • Have safe and secure homes with nice size fully secure gardens (minimum 6ft fencing) for the dogs to enjoy outside time for mooching, zoomies and sunbathing.
  • If you have additional private secure land where the whippet can be walked without the risk of seeing other dogs this would be an added bonus, but not essential (stock fencing will be considered for privately owned land).
  • If you don’t have your own secure land, then it would be beneficial if you could take the Whippet to a secure private dog field a few times a week for a leg stretch and safe off lead play. These can usually be hired from around £5 – £10 for an hour.
  • To not need, or want, to take your dog for days out or on holiday, unless you are going to a completely private place where you won’t meet other dogs.

Generally the dogs that need this type of home need to be only pets, with no visiting dogs either, but occasionally we get ones that are ok with another dog inside their own home, these dogs can be homed with another whippet, pending successful introductions.

We know this is an incredibly big ask, but these whippets are so extremely loving inside the home and they deserve to have their happy ever after. They just need understanding adopters who will appreciate their needs and not put them in dangerous or unessesary situations.

If you think you can offer this type of home please fill in an adoption application and we will be in touch to discuss things in more detail. Please note we carry out a home visit before adoptions take place and we offer lifetime support and backup.

Three of the dogs we currently have looking for this type of home are 10 year old Mia, 8 year old Roxy and 7 year old Alfie. If you visit our Facebook page, you can find out more about them on their photos.
